In discussing our endorsement of Kass Ardinger, the Concord Monitor referred to EMILY’s List as a group that promotes anti-abortion Democratic women. This description not only does not apply to Ardinger, but it does not apply to us. At EMILY’s List we’ve been working for nearly 30 years to elect more pro-choice Democratic women – women like Ardinger – to political offices up and down the ballot.

How did EMILY’s List help you in your campaign, and how do you think the group can help women more generally?

It’s about having someone else validate your capacity to lead, and that’s what EMILY’s List did for me. They helped me at the very beginning without knowing it; they came in when I’d started running and helped me. But, more recently, when I became leader [of the Georgia House Democrats], EMILY’s List was there to help me think about my leadership. What do I need to be doing as leader to solidify that role, but also, how do I build my capacity to do even more? Having women who look like you and sound like you, who think something of you and will tell you—that has a validating effect that cannot be underestimated.

Today marks 30 years since Geraldine Ferraro became the first woman to join a major party’s presidential ticket. When she joined Vice President Walter Mondale’s presidential ticket in 1984, Geraldine Ferraro didn’t just make history, she changed the political world for women – for women as candidates and as participants in our democracy.

During the campaign she said, “This candidacy is not just a symbol, it’s a breakthrough. It’s not just a statement, it’s a bond between women all over America.” And she was right, having women run for office isn’t about symbolism – it’s about having a truly representative democracy. Everyone needs to have a voice at the table.

I just wanted to make ends meet and make a better life for my daughter Amber and me. But I was able to achieve those things through hard work and sacrifice along with a healthy dose of help from family and friends.
That’s why I believe in the promise of Texas — a promise rooted in the belief that if you work hard, where you start in life shouldn’t determine how far you can go.
As governor, that’s one promise I will always fight to make sure we keep.
Whenever I’d meet a little girl on the campaign trail, I’d bend down, take her pinky and tell her, “I’m Elizabeth and I’m running for Senate, because that’s what girls do.” I’ve probably made pinky promises with hundreds of girls all across Massachusetts. That’s what girls do, because EMILY’s List made it what girls do.

Shelley Moore Capito is the Republican nominee for Senate in West Virginia. And she’s telling voters she’s pro-choice. Which is almost as insulting as her consistently anti-woman, anti-family, and yes, anti-choice record.

Shelley has voted with GOP extremists again and again against choice

Why Shelley Moore Capito Is Wrong For West Virginia

In 2013, she received a perfect score of 100% from the National Right to Life Committee, and neither NARAL nor Planned Parenthood have ever rated her above 50%.

Which probably explains why she voted to defund Planned Parenthood

Why Shelley Moore Capito Is Wrong For West Virginia

Speaking of voting against women’s access to health care, she voted for a 20-week abortion ban

Why Shelley Moore Capito Is Wrong For West Virginia

And she supported a bill that would have forced IRS agents to audit rape survivors who sought abortion care

Why Shelley Moore Capito Is Wrong For West Virginia

Remember HR 3, “Stupak on Steroids”? Shudder

Shelley is so anti-choice (How anti-choice is she?) she supported a bill that would grant hospitals the power to deny women abortions in any situation

Why Shelley Moore Capito Is Wrong For West Virginia

Hospitals can make health care decisions for women, and so can a woman’s employer - Shelley cosponsored the House version of the Blunt Amendment

Why Shelley Moore Capito Is Wrong For West Virginia

Shelley voted for the Ryan Budget, which would have repealed Obamacare, voted to cut billions of dollars from SNAP benefits, and voted to end Medicare as we know it

Why Shelley Moore Capito Is Wrong For West Virginia

Shelley’s votes hurt West Virginia.

Shelley has voted to repeal or defund Obamacare at least 50 times

Why Shelley Moore Capito Is Wrong For West Virginia

That’s a lot.

Hypocrisy alert! Under President Bush, Shelley urged John Boehner to raise the minimum wage but now opposes it.

Why Shelley Moore Capito Is Wrong For West Virginia

66% of minimum wage earners in West Virginia are women.

She voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act

Why Shelley Moore Capito Is Wrong For West Virginia

Women in West Virginia only make $0.70 for every dollar a man makes. And it’s worse for women of color. African American women only make $0.59 on the dollar and Latinas make $0.58.

And to top it off, John Boehner, Eric Cantor, and Paul Ryan are Shelley’s voting BFFs

Why Shelley Moore Capito Is Wrong For West Virginia

She voted with them 88%, 92% and 94% of the time, respectively.
